According to an article in The New York Times, in June 1931, with the building complete except for interior finishes and closing in the roof, the owners, Eugene E. Lignante and the H. K. Ferguson Company of Cleveland, stopped work, apparently out of funds. The New York Title and Mortgage Company, which had advanced $2.2 million for construction, began foreclosing. But as other projects failed, the mortgagee soon went into receivership. And, as the Depression deepened, Hampshire House loomed over the elegant skyline, a dark mass by night, an empty hulk by day. In the fall of 1937, the Hampshire House finally opened as a rental building.

According to an article in The New York Observer, Rupert Murdoch used to live in the Hampshire House. Dorothy Hale also used to reside in the building.

Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Milos Forman, Ingrid Bergman, Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner once lived in the building. The Hampshire House, located at 150 Central Park South, was designed in an Art Deco and Regency style by A. Rollin Caughey and William F. Evans Jr.

According to an article in The New York Times, working with A. Rollin Caughey, the decorator Dorothy Draper redesigned the public rooms into some of the most significant interiors of the 30's or 40's, with daring contrasts of black, white and turquoise, overscale plaster carving, mirrors and glass block and extraordinary door moldings of cast clear glass.
