The Gainsborough Studios

The Gainsborough Studios is the exquisite 16 floor Central Park apartment building built in 1905 and known for its exquisite facade and bust of Thomas Gainsborough at the entrance. The Gainsborough at 222 Central Park South was developed by a group of artists led by August Franzen and was planned as combined living and studio space for artists. The building is named after Thomas Gainsborough, the English artist, whose bust appears on the façade above the entrance. The Gainsborough was designated an official city landmark in 1988.

222 Central Park South has only 34 Central Park South apartments in the entire building. Most studios (coops) have fabulous double-height living rooms with stunning views of Central Park from oversized picture windows.

 The Central Park apartments in the front are all duplexes, each with a two-story living room with approximately 18 foot ceilings, overlooked by a sweeping balcony.

Many of the duplexes offer arts and craft style, tiled fireplaces, leaded-glass cabinetry and mahogany and oak woodwork were custom-designed for their initial occupants. The apartments range in size from approximately 750 to 1,400 square feet, with some combined units ranging up to 2,000 square feet.
